How I spent my Lunar New Year - Saturday

Friends, Korea, Out and about, Seoul, This is life

This year, Lunar New Year (”Sollal” in Korean, Chinese New Year) fell on a Sunday, which meant that Koreans had Saturday and Monday off. I spent the long weekend by going to Seoul and hanging out with Allison for a couple days. It was a much needed break because I was getting cabin fever hanging out at Reardon’s while he’s in New York.
Traffic on Saturday going to Seoul wasn’t bad at all. The bus ride from Chuncheon to Seoul was still one and a half hours. Upon arriving, Allison and I went to Myeong-dong to do some shopping and look for the Apple store. It was a great day to go because the shopping area wasn’t nearly as busy at it usually is.

All the pictures from this day can be seen HERE.

Allison bough some new kicks. Aren’t they wild? She wore them out the next day.

Doggie lingerie - complete with booties. This belongs in the WTF category.

I don’t care what anyone says. I like fish paste on a stick, wrapped around glutenous rice (ddeok) and then deep fried. Okay, so it doesn’t sound so good when you explain it like that. Still, very good.

After an exhausting day of shopping, we went over to Kyla and Paul’s for vodka and cranberry cocktails. The pink purse is Allison’s - tres cute.

Later that night, we went out to Gecko’s in Itaewon and met up with a bunch of other people who’s names I don’t remember. (Above is a picture of Al, Wilson, me, and Jamie.) While near the bar, I bumped into this guy that said, “Hey, aren’t you lao-ocean-girl?” I’m trying to remember how I know this person, because he seemed vaguely familiar. Then it hit me. “Oh yeah! You’re Robert? Bob? You’re one of my contacts on Flickr!” That was pretty random, but cool meeting people who’s pictures I browse. I have an RSS feed to Flickr photos that are tagged “Seoul” and “Korea”. I’m guessing that the next person I meet from Flckr is going to be SuzyQuzy.

After Gecko’s, we went to B1, where Allison pushed herself over the edge and had a really strong Long Island there. She paid for it the next day with a bad hang-over. We dropped by Bricx for five minutes before going to McDonald’s for a Big Mac. It was 3:30 am and there were at least 25 people there (I counted). What I really wanted was a sausage egg McMuffin, but there was no way either of us were going to stay out for another hour and a half when breakfast starts.

So, that was day 1 of 2 in Seoul. I’ll post Sunday’s pictures tomorrow.
