Transformers the movie screened in Seoul What do YOU eat?
Jun 14

I’m really busy this week - trying to get things wrapped up before I leave for Oregon on Monday. The English final at our university is tomorrow at 5 pm, and then afterward, Ras and I head up to Seoul for Curtis’ birthday. Final grades have to be turned in next week, but I have to rush and get them done this weekend before I go.
While I’ll be in Oregon for two months, Ras will have to stay in Korea. Part of the reason is to take over some of my summer obligations while I’m away. The other reason is because he injured his finger and has to go to the hospital twice a week for six weeks.

A couple weeks ago, Ras, Reardon, and Kevin were at the Han River in Seoul and borrowed a football from two lesbians trying to play catch. Ras caught the ball wrong and jammed his left ring finger… or so he thought. On your finger, you have three sections - 1) the part that connects to your palm, 2) the middle section of your finger, and 3) the tip of the finger. Ras had injured the joint that connects parts 2 and 3 together. If he held his finger straight out, section 3 just hung there, like a wet noodle, not able to support itself. Four days of coaxing and two hospitals later, he was told to have surgery on his finger for a torn tendon.

That was two days ago. It was only a 30 minute procedure to put a pin through the tip of his finger. We figured he’d be out the same day - wrong. He had to stay overnight at the hospital, so the staff could monitor him. At first, we thought it was pretty unnecessary since we live practically in front of the hospital, 3 minutes away. They refused to let him leave early, so I brought him his laptop and some toiletries for the night. The picture below makes him look a lot more pathetic than it really was.

The next morning, I went to visit Ras and happened to be there when the doctor made his rounds and redressed his finger. We got to see the huge pin sticking out of his finger. It was kind of disgusting, actually.

 By the way, the whole thing - doctor’s consultation, finger and chest x-rays, surgery, medical supplies, overnight stay at the hospital, and 6 weeks of follow-ups cost under 100,00 won ($100) because it’s covered by national health insurance!  It know it would never be that cheap back  in the United States.

    That’s kinds disgusting, but at the same time it’s pretty awesome.

    It certainly trumps the metal screw in my knee that you can feel through the skin!

    not sure if it trumps a screw you can feel!  and, we must part ways in 6 weeks - i\’m hoping that the hospital will let me keep the pin after they pull it out.  now, that would cool.

    Only in Korea would you have an hospital stay for something like that! You’re right the picture does make it look pathetic! It’s kind of funny to be in the hospital for a torn tendon in your fingertips! It sounds like you and I will have similar weekends. My report cards are due on Wednesday. Although I’ve been working on them for 2 weeks now, this weekend I have to put my comments (1 pgh each) in 7 subject areas for my 19 students :( Oh well…10 more school days until 2 months off! Yipee!

    i guess no football at the beach this summer. =( well, at least it only takes one hand to drink a beer.

  5. raswan Says:

    i’ll drink with one hand, go in the water with my arm reaching to the sky, and i’ll be sure to bring my lightweight frisbee. i’m sure we can still squeeze a meaningful beach summer out of korea this year. the powerofpositivethinking (corona, steaks, sun…)

    The screw dates back to knee surgery. Apparently today they use ones that dissolve. It’s pretty cool when I see an x-ray of my knee and there are two big screws right in the middle of it.

    The pin definitely needs to become some type of jewelry.

    One thing I\’m sure is, You (Raswan) will never leave the airport without beeping ^^;
    I\’m sorry about your injury.
