4th of July pics

I’ve uploaded my 4th of July firework pictures to Flickr. The firework show downtown was ok – good but not fantastic. Still, it was nice to get out and be festive with everyone.

The pictures turned out ok for my first attempt at firework pictures. This was despite the fact that I didn’t even have a tripod – couldn’t be bothered to buy one and then bring it back to Korea with me.

Not having a tripod (and a long exposure) has its advantages. I got this cool shot:

It’s titled: “Why the heck is my camera taking so long to snap the picture? Let me take a look at it. …Oh wait, there it goes.”

The Columbia Willamette River runs through Portland.

Great photos, they would look great with lightbox

The Columbia does go just north of town, but your pictures are all of fireworks and bridges over the Willamette River. Morrison and Hawthorne bridges in the pictures, right?

I was in Portland for too few days in June. Next time, I’ll go there and make everyone else come to me! Even though I grew up in California, I spent 10 years living in Oregon prior to coming to Korea. When I think of home, it is Oregon that comes to mind because it is my home by choice, not by birth.

I’ve been in Korea for almost 6 years now, and though I start to get “homesick” for my apartment and my own bed when I’m traveling, I still don’t have that feeling of calling this place my real home. I don’t know if I ever will.

Awesome pictures! I have yet to take my first firework pics. What lens/camera combo are you using? I am using a 400D + Tamron 17-50. I want to get a mid range zoom for my next lens, or maybe a prime.

I picked up a pretty cheap and sturdy tripod from Namdaemun. It’s called “Esse” and it’s a Korean tripod that was very popular in the past. It was sold as a promotional item with cameras but now they are discontinued. It came with a zipper shoulder case and the head swivels in all directions. I paid 45,000w for mine from the Canon store in Namdaemun. He had to call and have it delivered (it took 5 minutes).

Joe – I’ve been gone so long that I had a momentary lapse of reason. You’re right, that’s the Willamette!

Gdog – I’m also using the 400D, but I rented a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM for 3 weeks, and that’s what I shot these firework pictures with. How’s the Tamron? I’ve never bought a lens in Korea. Do you know what prices are like? [Here's the post about the lens I rented.]

Hey, the Tamron is working out pretty well. As my first lens, it’s a nice lens that works well in low light with its f2.8 throughout.

As for the prices, you can save huge by buying grey market, which are Canon lenses with the Jap. warranty. My 400D is the Kiss Digital X, the same model but just with a different badge in the corner. I paid 630,000w for the body only…that was back in December.

I prices aren’t bad in Korea, if you buy the grey market. I went to the Canon shop in Namdaemun…the best way to track prices is to check out prices online http://omi.co.kr

I want another lens, but I’m not sure what I want…I’d like a mid range zoom, I was thinking of the maybe the 70-200 F4 L as a long term investment…that’s what I’m trying to convince myself! :)

yeah, the 70-200 FL L would be a very BIG investment. Let me know if you ever get it, I’d like to see the pictures.

You and Max Watson got me really curious about the Tamrom 17-50. I’ve been reading reviews about it and everyone seems to love it. One even said it’s as sharp as the Canon 50mm 1.8, which I absolutely LOVE. I might very well pick it up before I go back to Korea!
