A Quick Trip to K-Mart
I had this really strong craving for Shin ramen and kimchi today… don’t know why. I don’t think we’ve had any kimchi in the apartment for at least 3 months. That was during the pork, rice, and kimchi phase. It comes and goes. Right now, it’s baked chicken and beef. Anyway, my mouth was watering for kimchi. I ventured down the 23 floors and walked to K-Mart, the small grocery store in my neighborhood. K-Mart = Korean Mart?
They didn’t have my favorite brand, but there was CJ kimchi. It’s a big brand, so I figured I’d try it. You know what really convinced me to buy it? Look at the bottom of the package.

“CJ Kimchi, Luxury In Your Mouth“ I’ve always wondered what oral luxury tastes like. My prayers have been answered!
I also picked up these king oyster mushrooms, which are in season now and cheap. Two bags for 1500 won (~$1.50 USD). They’re great pan fried with butter. I also spotted Haitai ginger ale! The taste was ok, but for 900 won, I’d sooner buy the familiar Canada Dry ginger ale.

Last but not least, there’s a new flavor of Yoplait yogurt: cream cheese & pineapple cheese. As weird and unpleasant as pineapple cheese sounds, I wouldn’t mind trying one… but not four for 2700 won. Maybe they’ll have individual ones at Family Mart sometime in the future. If so, I’ll have a taste test.

Where d’ya get your Canada Dry? I tried the Haitai ginger ale — wasted a whole mickey of Canadian Club trying to figure out if it was good enough or not for mixing. Probably not.
It’s a little sweet, but if you mix maesil and ‘cider’ in the right proportions, it ends up tasting a bit like ginger ale. It’s really not bad!
I picked up some Canada Dry the last time I was in Itaewon. Across the street from KFC, there’s a small mini mart, with lots of foreign drinks. Any department store will also have it in their drink aisle.
Maesil & cider? The poor man’s ginger ale? You know what we should do… make REAL ginger ale… with real ginger. I wonder how that would turn out.
You know what? That’s an awesome idea! I didn’t realize how easy it was…

The only thing I don’t know how to get off the top of my head is the active yeast. Everything else should be easy peasy! Hrm.. Maybe I’ll run to e-mart tonight and see what they’ve got.
Great minds think alike. I bought some ginger yesterday, but didn’t have enough sugar to make ginger ale last night. I’ve seen recipes where you don’t need the yeast. I don’t know about “active” yeast, but I’ve seen yeast at Kim’s Club… and maybe E-Mart.
Due to being away last weekend and being busy for most of this one (not to mention just remembering about this now…) … I just started a bottle to see how it goes.
The non-yeast recipes involve a carbonator (those sealed metal bottles that take co2 cartridges) … which is no good, because they are expensive, hard to find, and are unable to make alcohol.
Yeast, on the other hand, is none of those things! Unfortunately, while I had enough sugar, I didn’t have any lemon, so I used one of those ‘power’ drinks for a little flavor (and energy kick). I just set it outside, I’ll let you know how it tastes tomorrow.
