I saw the Laos episode, too, and was wondering what you thought of it.

I was surprised the episode was so reflective, and didn’t show much FOOD. For his first time visiting, Anthony Bourdain could have done a better job showcasing the food, because I’m sure not many people know what Lao food is like. This episode would have been good as a returning trip to Laos. Instead, I think he could have had showcased Laos with Luang Prabang (food & culture), and the variety of things to eat in Vientiane.
Overall, the episode was okay, but it left me wanting to know more.

Sometimes Tony goes to places that speak to the political issues of his younger years. The first Russian one on “A Cook’s Tour,” the recent Colombia episode, exploring Cold War Berlin, Beirut, and really, it’s the reason why he is so obsessed with Vietnam.
I think the secret war in Laos and Cambodia was one of those mysteries that he remembered seeing on TV in the past and wants to confront it in person.

I haven’t watched any of those other episodes, and didn’t know where he was coming from. Knowing what you’ve said.. it makes sense.
