Today I Love:

From Postsecret.

Here’s a line of clothing called “Kimchi Blue” from Urban Outfitters.  I think more than anything, the name caught my eye.

My mom picked up a “Desert King” fig tree today.  I don’t think I’ll be around to see it bear fruit, but I love fruit trees, so I’m excited nonetheless.  A cut up fig can be seen here.  This variety is good for the cooler climate of the northwest.

Thanks for making me homesick! I miss the clean air, the green, and the beer selection the most. Though I’m not a huge beer drinker, just having many, many choices is nice.

    So are figs and hummus.

As far as programs of study goes, what are you looking into (field and school)? Just curious.

I want to be around the Portland area, so that limits what schools I’ll choose from. Right now, these are the four I’m considering. All programs are inclusive of a masters and a teaching license.

    1. Portland State (Masters in Education)
    2. Concordia University (Masters in Teaching)
    3. George Fox (Masters in Teaching)
    4. Pacific University (Masters in Teaching)

Don’t forget to look into Lewis & Clark, as their MA program is ranked quite high in the nation. Unfortunately, it is more costly than any of the others on the list. They used to have an MAT program, which is what I did there. However,I think it’s since changed to an MEd. I had a Principal tell me once that the Lewis and Clark resumes tend to find their way to the top of the stack because the teachers are better prepared and do a better job their first few years of teaching. Perhaps I’m just biased though.

I’ve been out of the loop for a while, but knowing teachers who have gone through each of them on the list, I’d put George Fox above Pacific. Concordia and PSU are both pretty good. It may depend on what you’re planning to teach, also. ESL? English? Or something completely different? If there is a particular school that you’d like to work in, don’t be afraid to make an appointment with the principal and ask him or her which program they would recommend because some have preferences. I taught at Beaverton High School, but the administration has completely changed since then. I do still have some good friends who teach there. I used to know people at Hill High, but they’ve moved on. (I taught in a summer migrant program there). It is a long way from where your mother lives, but the east county schools have had increasingly better and better reputations for working environments (Reynolds, Barlow, David Douglas school districts). I’d avoid portland public schools, not because of the schools themselves, but because of so many funding issues.

Whatever you decide, best of luck to you. I’m going in the other direction. Having started in public schools, moved to Korea and worked in a hogwan, then at two universities, I’m going to start a doctorate program this July in England. After taking over a couple of MA courses last year, I realized that I probably would never step foot in a high school (as a teacher) again. But I want to do things right in the future, so that means more education. It’ll be a part-time program that entails two trips there a year for two years, then two years to write my dissertation. Then hopefully I’ll be able to work in a university elsewhere in the world.

    Hi,

It is very wonderful article. I like the different type of design and printed fabric which is very cost effective. Everybody should buy it.
